It does change, but in recent weeks we have been consistently at the no 1 position on Google for three of our target keywords:

Although we have clients all over the country, these keywords and phrases represent our main target area for growth as new business in other locations is more likely to come through referrals or contacts.
So how did we get there? Well the first thing to note is that the position does change and needs regular attention to reach and maintain a high position in search engine results. This is because Google bases the order of search engine results on its secret algorithm and index of the world’s web pages. This index is constantly updated and the algorithm constantly tweaked, so one month you might be number one for a particular phrase, the next month lower down the listing depending on the actions of your competitors.
So what did we do to raise our website up the search engine rankings?
- Our website is easily readable indexed by search engines
As you might expect our website is setup so it can be easily read and indexed by search engines. We have the correct page tags in place and is easily editable. Also the web addresses of each page and section reflect the content and are simple.
- We research our target keywords and phrases
We have been realistic about our target phrases and researched what people might be typing into search engines to locate services that we provide. This is a vital step in writing the contents of a website and Google provides an excellent keyword planner tool (you’ll need a Google Account to use it) so you can research what people are typing into Google, past search volumes and monthly trends. You then use these phrases in your website content.
- Our website is regularly updated with new content shared on social media and email marketing
We regularly blog about the web, business and security issues that might affect our clients and potential clients. This is always shared on our social media sites and is often read, sometimes liked and sometimes shared which helps boost our website with Google. We also regularly update and submit an XML search map to Google and Microsoft’s Bing.
- We are in the habit of tagging all our pages
As well as the website automatically generating simple, descriptive web addresses for each page and section, we have the facilities for easily adding important ‘meta’ tags for each page: title, description and keywords.
- We regularly review our web statistics and other performance indicators
Doing this helps us work out where our visitors are coming from, the phrases triggering their visits, date and time and a huge amounts of other data. We also record and track phone and email enquiries and try to ask how they found out about us.
