It has been confirmed by various senior Google personnel that the latest Google update was not the expected update to Penguin (a Google algorithm update aimed at decreasing search engine rankings of websites that violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines by using now declared black hat SEO techniques involved in increasing artificially the ranking of a webpage by manipulating the number of links pointing to the page) but an update to its core algorithm.
@jenstar yes, the changes you saw are part of a core algo update. @Missiz_Z is right almost always, you shan’t need my confirmation

@dawnieando It’s not penguin; not “confirmed-ish” just “confirmed” :-).

Google rarely confirms core algorithm updates so it is unusual for Google, albeit through senior personnel, to confirm that a Google update had indeed taken place. We noticed this for some of our client with websites rankings going in both directions. Clearly we are taking action on those negatively affected, but also basking in the glory of doing things the right way for those positively affected.
We are still waiting for a new update to the Google Penguin update. This will have major repercussions throughout the digital marketing and SEO industry and will impact those who work at the edge of what Google allows. If your SEO company talks about artificial link building by purchasing links, PBNs (private blogging networks) or other spammy SEO techniques then run for the hills as you are likely to see your website search engine rankings plummet.
If you focus on the following and doing them well you will immunise your website from future Penguin update ranking penalties:
- CTR (Click Through Rate) – through good meta tagging of the pages to attract clicks in SERPS
- Traffic – through SEO, traditional marketing and PR and PPC when appropriate
- User Experience – have a fast loading, appealing website that enables users to find what they are looking for
- Quality Content – have useful content that will solve a problem, help or entertain people and keep updating regularly
